Graylyn Estate Engagement in Winston Salem

What a power couple! Two doctors about to get married. We were originally scheduled to do their session at Pilot Mountain, but due to the recent wildfires, the landscape looked quite charred and more importantly, the drive up to the top was closed off for the day. As a last resort, Emily brought up the Graylyn Estate, so that is where we went. This place was absolutely beautiful. I had seen certain areas of this place in magazines and blogs. It didn’t click what this place was until I saw some of those famous spots! One being the columned corner on the back patio. That image above looks so film-like (shout out to Archetype Process film profiles).

I had a lot of fun working with Emily and Brad. As a Winston Salem photographer, it’s nice exploring new areas, but also exploring the relationship between photographer and client. Near the end of the session, I felt like we were friends and were ready to capture their wedding confidently in a couple of months.

ONE DAY, EVERYTHING CHANGED

I USED TO HATE PHOTOGRAPHING PEOPLE

My photography career started in high school with a darkroom class. When learning, I naturally gravitated towards what inspired me: birds, nature, pretty sunsets, patterns, and anything colorful. However, my teacher challenged me to try taking pictures of people. At the time, I protested and instead chose to do self portraits.

It wasn't until 2017 when I was asked to second shoot a wedding that my opinion changed. On that day, I experienced the joys of what make weddings special. I was invited into an intimate and emotionally full day with guests coming from out of state, generations of families putting on their elevated outfits, the raw tears of a first look, and the love pouring out of the couple and its guests.

Capturing all of this was powerful, rewarding, and energizing. I knew from then on what I wanted to do with my life.
