"He is the best photographer around, and his calm, witty, and joyful presence was a wonderful addition to the day. He made my husband and I feel so comfortable, and he did a fabulous job of capturing the love and the vibes of the day!"
It's just about you two and that's all that matters!
A courthouse wedding is one of the most honest ways to get married. They are quick and simple, but don't let that fool you into thinking your wedding is less real than others. While there is no build up or long aisle, the anticipation and emotion are just as real as an extravagant wedding.
You walk in, say a few words, you look at each other, kiss, and then it hits you: you're married!
Most couples don't remember every detail, but I observe the nervousness of walking in, the steadiness once started, and the quietness and realness the whole way through. It's not made to impress anyone.
Courthouse weddings in Raleigh take place at the Wake County Justice Center, located at 300 S Salisbury St. The building is modern with clean lines, glass, and stone, and is 11 stories tall. Ceremonies happen on the 9th floor, where you’ll find a beautiful open view of downtown.

Afterwards, you walk outside and it hits you; you're married! Most couples take a walk downtown, take photos, maybe grab a drink or food nearby. No rush. No pressure. If you want to do family photos, that is absolutely welcome!
The Wake County Justice Center performs weddings Monday - Friday from 9:30am - 11:30am and 1:30pm - 3:30pm. Fridays can be busy just prior to the weekend, so be prepared to wait a bit or aim to arrive before 1:30 to get in line.
Courthouse weddings are only available on weekdays during certain times

You must get your wedding license before our courthouse wedding. You don't need to get it far in advance though. Many couples choose to go to the Register of Deeds in the morning, head upstairs to the courthouse and get married on the same day. However, this office can get busy, so give yourselves extra time (say 30-60 minutes). More information can be found here: https://www.wakegov.com/departments-government/register-deeds
Get your marriage license from Wake County before your ceremony
A magistrate performs the ceremony

We'll head up to the 9th floor, which is where the courthouse is. The courthouse is first come, first serve. These ceremonies are very brief; 5-10 minutes in length. You are allowed to bring your own vows if you wish. Space is limited, so keep your guest count small.
You and your guests are allowed to stay present!
You might not think you need one because the ceremony is short, the day is simple, but that is exactly why it matters. Everything happens so fast, you won't notice half of it in the moment. Having someone there means you don't have to worry about photos at all.

Yes, this is one of the most honest ways to get married. It deserves to be remembered!
Yes, North Carolina requires at least one witness (that can be me).
I'd aim to get there at 1:30 if you want to beat the rush, otherwise the later in the day the better for more beautiful light.
I highly recommend us to just take a walk through downtown. We are so lucky in that our town is beautiful! There's beautiful light, architecture, texture, and plenty of quiet spots within walking distance.
If your date is a few months out, I require a 50% deposit, but otherwise I require a full payment prior to your wedding date.
About David
Emily & Eric
Hey, I'm David and I'm a wedding photographer in Raleigh, North Carolina who has a soft spot for courthouse weddings and elopements. I keep things simple: I stay close, I pay attention, and I love weddings. Courthouse weddings move fast and moments happen quickly. My job is to be there for them without getting in the way, overly directing, or turning a moment into something it's not. If you need a little guidance, I'm happy to give it. If not, I let things unfold naturally. Just show up and I'll take care of the rest!
"Not only is David incredibly talented, he goes above and beyond for his clients! His personality makes for a calm and fun photo session where you can feel your best."
